Isolation 2, Walberswick, Suffolk. Limited Edition And Signed Silver Gelatin Fine Art Print

Isolation 2, Walberswick, Suffolk.

This is image no2 in a series that has become a project called isolation. The image is a long exposure along the coastal sureline at Walberswick Beach, Suffolk, looking towards Sizewell Power Stations. The image is very unusual because it is was actually the most beautiful sunset, with vibrant colours. Unfortunately I had two film backs with me both loaded up with black & white film. So, never wanting to miss an opportunity to experiment I clicked the shutter on this frame using black and white film.

The print itself took some time to form, I wanted to add some colour back into the highlight area of the long exposed waves. This meant experimenting lots! with sepia toning to find the perfect mix of raw chemicals and bleaches along with time to perfect the perfect reddish hue.

Shot using my trusted Hasselblad 500 C/M medium format camera using Kodak Tri-x 400 film. The film is then hand developed by me in my home Darkroom to meet my own exact requirements. Developing film and exposing film can be a dark art to achieve the best negatives to print from.

Photography and isolation can be interconnected in various ways, both conceptually and practically. For me it’s about the being void of other people allowing myself to connect to the landscape without interference, and find the time and mental space to explore and find the surreal in the real. Here are some perspectives on how photography and isolation intersect.

Self-Reflection and Introspection:

  • Photographic Journaling: Isolation can provide an opportunity for self-reflection. Photography becomes a tool for capturing moments, emotions, and changes during this introspective time. Creating a photographic journal can be a therapeutic way to express one's feelings and experiences.

  1. Documenting Isolation:

    • Visual Storytelling: Photographers may choose to document isolation itself, capturing the emptiness of public spaces, the solitude of individuals, and the overall mood of isolation. This can serve as a historical record or a commentary on the times.

  2. Creativity in Solitude:

    • Personal Projects: Isolation can be a fertile ground for personal photographic projects. With fewer distractions, photographers may find the time and mental space to explore new techniques, experiment with styles, or delve into niche subjects they might not have considered before.

  3. Emotional Expression:

    • Cathartic Photography: Isolation can evoke a range of emotions. Photography can be a cathartic outlet, allowing individuals to channel their feelings into visual expressions. Whether it's capturing moments of solitude or finding beauty in the mundane, photography becomes a means of emotional release.

  4. Virtual Connection:

    • Photographic Communication: In an era of connectedness through technology, photography becomes a medium for communicating experiences of isolation. Sharing images online can foster a sense of community, allowing people to connect and relate to each other's stories despite physical distance.

  5. Nature and Solitude:

    • Landscape Photography: Isolation in natural settings provides an opportunity for landscape photography. The absence of human presence can emphasize the beauty and serenity of nature, showcasing landscapes untouched by crowds.

  6. Technical Mastery:

    • Skill Development: Isolation may offer the time and focus needed for photographers to hone their technical skills. Experimenting with new equipment, learning post-processing techniques, or diving into the intricacies of composition can be pursued in isolation.

  7. Symbolism and Metaphor:

    • Conceptual Photography: Isolation can be symbolized through composition, framing, and subject choices in photography. Photographers may use visual elements to convey feelings of solitude, confinement, or introspection.

Photography can serve as a powerful means of expression during times of isolation, allowing individuals to connect with themselves, their surroundings, and a global audience. It can be a tool for both personal growth and societal reflection, capturing the essence of isolation in all its facets.
