IH39 is a fishing boat sitting high and dry on the shingle beach, it is in a slightly wrecked state, and looking worse for wear. But for the photographer it gives the perfect opportunity to capture the unique textures this boat and its surrounding has to offer.
Aldeburgh, being a coastal town in Suffolk, England, has a long history of fishing, and fishing boats are a common sight in the area. The Beach and the town are a popular seaside destination known for its picturesque setting, historic architecture, and cultural events. The beach itself is a shingle beach with stunning views of the North Sea.
The beach is also famous for hosting the annual Aldeburgh Carnival, a traditional event featuring various activities, parades, and entertainment. Additionally, the iconic Scallop sculpture by artist Maggi Hambling can be found on the northern end of the beach, dedicated to the composer Benjamin Britten, who had a strong connection to the area.
The print itself took some time to form, I wanted to add some colour back into the highlight area in the boat and the sky. This meant experimenting lots with sepia toning, to find the perfect mix of raw chemicals and bleach times to perfect the perfect reddish hue.
Shot using my trusted Hasselblad 500 C/M medium format camera using Kodak Tri-x 400 film. The film is then hand developed by me in my home Darkroom to meet my own exact requirements. Developing film and exposing film can be a dark art to achieve the best negatives to print from.

Printed on Ilford matt fibre base paper and selenium toned to insure its archival quality
Mounted and matted using Antique White Mount board.

This is a hand printed print, whilst I try to insure accuracy in the printing process little flaws in the final print are common. Ultimately, it’s these little flaws that gives each silver gelatin print there wonderful uniqueness.
